Dixie Dregs began life in Augusta, Georgia as the Dixie Grits. Lead guitarist Steve Morse, a founding member of the band, picked up more experience and members of the band at University of Miami in the mid-‘70s.
With a little help from the Allman Brothers, they signed a contract with Capricorn Records. Their 1979 album Night of the Living Dregs won a Grammy.
More than a dozen musicians have been Dregs over the years. It is not unusual for them to reform in various configurations to play a few dates or make recordings. Morse is sometimes said to be one of the hardest working rock guitars around. Violinist Jerry Goodman played earlier in his career with John McLaughlin’s Mahvishnu Orchestra.
