I’m a blues fan, and coming to it from rock music, my preferences run to the electric Chicago style. When it comes to Chicago blues, it’s easy to settle on Muddy Waters as THE king of the blues. Bringing rural Mississippi blues north to bright all-night city lights of Chicago during the great black migration (flight?) gives Muddy a foot in each world.
The pictures in this gallery are from his Jubilee performance in Chapel Hill in 1971. It was a dream com true for this country boy. Band members were: Pinetop Perkins, piano; Sammy Lawhorn, guitar, Pee Wee Madison, guitar; Calvin “Fuzz” Jones, bass; Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, drums, and Paul Oscher, harp.
