I became a fan of Bruce Hampton back in the early ‘70s when the Hampton Grease Band released “Music to Eat.” It was an exquisite assault and said to be one of the worst selling albums in Columbia Records history.
Aquarium Rescue Unit was a jam band he put together in in the early 1990s, and it featured artists known for their improvisation skill: Jimmy Herring on guitar, Oteil Burbridge, Jeff Sipe, and Matt Mundy. Your help identifying the saxophonist, would be appreciated.
They were one of the founding bands of the HORDE Festival, at which these photos were taken in August 1993. You will find members of this band frequently cross pollinating with other jam bands such as the Allman Brothers, Widespread Panic, Keller Williams, Trey Anastasio, and Blues Traveler. You may even remember Hampton from “Sling Blade” in which he played band manager.
