First draft, fragmentary
Back in 1988, Washington Daily News Publisher Brownie Futrell offered me his tickets to see Wynton Marsalis at East Carolina University’s performance series. I think I may have been the only jazz fan on the paper staff. Kitty and I went.
Being who I am, and having gotten the ticket from the newspaper where I worked, I did what came naturally. Shortly after the concert began, I grabbed my Olympus OM-3 and headed for the front of the auditorium. I actually got off six frames before ushers told me in very certain terms to stop. All six frames may be seen here.
Special thanks go to Tom the Jazzman who has been playing jazz for eastern North Carolina for 25 years. First for playing that music for us all that time, and second for remembering and telling me who played saxophone with Marsalis that night. I believe Tom hosted the evening.
