For many years, Freemasons visited their Home for Children to celebrate St. John’s Day each June. It was the largest Masonic event in North Carolina. As time went on, the gathering faded at the hands of several circumstances.
Last weekend, we saw the celebration renewed. The date has been changed to Alumni Weekend at the Home, the homecoming for the kids who were raised at the orphanage by the Masons of our state. And quite a few grads there are. It opened in 1873 and is one of the oldest continually operating orphanages in the country.
We held a barbecue contest, enjoyed some bluegrass music, and had a superb Shriners parade. Fun units marched by the crowd for about an hour.
