There are two primary Masonic organizations in North Carolina. I’m a member of (and work for) the older group, organized in 1787. The other is the Prince Hall Grand Lodge, organized in 1870. As you may know, society required that, because of race, we form separate organizations in that time. We remain different grand lodges now, respecting our long and distinguished histories.
I first attended their meeting in 2004 with then Grand Master Leonard Safrit. I have seldom missed the occasion since. In 2008, we became one of the first “slave state” grand lodges to initiate a normal Masonic relationship with our black counterparts. I was made an honorary member of their grand lodge in 2006 and greatly enjoy my visits with my brothers. As you may tell from my photos, one of the more impressive differences is the participation of the Masonic women’s organization, the Eastern Star.
Prince Hall Grand Lodge’s Annual Communication photos is posted here.
