First draft, fragmentary
First draft, fragmentary
For more than 50 years, Salisbury, North Carolina has looked forward to the last Thursday in February. No, it’s not the weather; as you might expect the weather is often pretty unfriendly. What gets them excited is Brunswick Stew.
It’s the day Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge cooks Brunswick stew for the town. They make more than 800 gallons of their custom recipe and ship it out in pint cups or serve it in bowls at the lodge dining hall. Everyone has his or her job and will tell you they like their better than anyone else’s.
All the money from the event (more than $10,000 each year) goes to charity. The guys in the lodge will tell you that the best thing about the event is the time they spend together preparing, cooking, and cleaning up.
But, who could blame them if they don’t want to see anymore stew for a few weeks?
