The Furthur Festival visited Raleigh in 1996. The best surprise of the event for me was Mickey Hart’s Magic Box. A wonderful and unique mix of percussion and harmonic vocals. The Mint Juleps’ singing sets off Hart’s lyrics that salute Jerry Garcia and John Cage along the exploratory path. “Only the Strange Remain.”

The Furthur Festival was Grateful Dead centric bands thumbing their noses at death. Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia died the previous year. Several of the Dead’s spin-off bands and former members were on the bill. Later in this show, Hornsby returned to the stage to play with Ratdog.
