One of the bright lights during the Disco Era was the television show WKRP in Cincinnati. Howard Hesseman played the quintessential ‘60s burnout, deejay Dr. Johnny Fever. (Hugh Wilson wrote quirky comedies with offbeat characters. One of my favorites of all time was Frank’s Place.)
In 1982, Hesseman was doing a publicity tour for a charity. I think it was some children’s cause. He was doing an on-air interview to the local rock station (WITN). I was invited over to grab some local art to go with the press releases for the paper.
It dawned on me later that he may have been sick of playing Fever, but he was very kind and generous in agreeing to put on the familiar persona for our little paper. He seemed a really nice warm fellow.
