What was it with the perm craze in the ’70s and ’80s?

Kyle may not have lived up to dad and granddad on the track, but he was respectable. At the microphone he has been one of the better racing commentators on television. In these pictures you can see that even as a 21-year-old, Petty was comfortable in front of the camera. Maybe growing up in the spotlight with his family made him a natural.
