First draft, fragmentary
Kitty and I have long been Leon Russell fans. I was lucky to see him back in 1971, and Kitty got her first concert a couple of years ago in Raleigh. Last Friday night, we took a quick spin down to Wilmington to see him again. He appeared healthier than last we saw him.
The venue was Brooklyn Arts Center, a converted 1888 St. Andrews Presbyterian Church on the north side of town. The sanctuary seems rather scooped out to a lower floor. Drapes are hung on strategic walls. At some places it seems restored (within the pulpit), at others fashionably razed (bare lathing on wither side of the stage back wall). Sound was good, though a bit too loud. We WERE on the third row, so likely as much our fault as the system’s. Ear Peace made life easier.
Leon’s performance was just fine. His supporting musicians are more than able. We were glad to see a good crowd gathered to hear his still strong enough pipes repeat some hits and even call up an interpretation of the Beatles.
Hell of a fine trip.
