In the next few weeks, North Carolina’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources will move into its new home in Downtown Raleigh -- Green Square. The globe will get a planet Earth covering.
One of the officers moving there will be State Geologist Jim Simons. I had call this week to take his picture for The North Carolina Mason. We decided to take it at the original state geologist’s office at the NC State Capitol. It dates from 1833 when Masons set the cornerstone to replace the Capitol recently destroyed by fire. Visible in the background is Elisha Mitchell’s chair. Mount Mitchell, the highest mountain east of the Mississippi, is named for the former state geologist.
