Before the February 18 Clemson game, John Wasworth and I visited the UNC Basketball Museum. It is a pilgrimage focus for Tar Heels all over. There are tokens of legend throughout the museum. There’s the scouting card they kept on Michael Jordan in high school, the basketball from Dean Smith’s record 877th win, shoes and uniforms from many Carolina’s great, nets from ACC and NCAA Tournament Championships, multimedia salutes to many great players, and personal interviews with the stars from the Hill.
My personal favorite was the scorebook from the greatest comeback of all time. In 1974, Carolina was down to Duke by eight points with 17 seconds left. Heels topped the comeback with a Walter Davis shot to tie at the buzzer. This before the three-point shot. Carolina won in overtime.
The Tar Heels beat Clemson that afternoon 74-52. Clemson has never won a men’s basketball game in Chapel Hill. They have lost 56 straight dating back to 1926.
