Hodding Carter was raised in Mississippi by a progressive, racial tolerance crusading newspaper publisher in the 1940s-50s. He was himself involved in the civil rights movement in Mississippi both editorially and by political action.
Carter came to national prominence as assistant secretary of state for public affairs during the Jimmy Carter Administration.
He currently is currently professor of leadership and public affairs at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. These photos were taken during the meeting of the North Carolina Press Club in 2006.
